Impetus for “Ultrasound for Midwives” came from ACNM members who wanted the skills to perform scans to meet the needs of their patients, to be properly educated to do so, to be able to officially add this skill to their scope of practice, and to have certification to enable them to bill for the scans they performed. The course has been designed to support midwifery students in preparing to start clinical practice. There is another course after graduation that is specific to preparing for the ARDMS ultrasound national CNM/CM certification.
Therefore, this specific course has been designed to meet the goals of midwifery students. This is an overview of Point of Care, limited, obstetric and basic gyn ultrasound for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs). It includes cross-sectional anatomy, basic non-pregnant anatomy, dating in all three trimesters of pregnancy, and common complications in each trimester. It also covers the Biophysical Profile, basic physics and business aspects, including billing, documentation and liability. The scope of practice for APPs according to the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and the American College of Nurse-Midwives is covered in detail. This course is not a review of overall fetal anatomy or anomalies other than necessary for dating criteria. Specialty continuing education credits have been applied for from the ACNM.
